Freeze the solar system at the second you were born, viewed from your birthplace, and draw it as a wheel — that's a birth chart. It records the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets against the twelve zodiac signs, divided into twelve segments called houses. Because the sky is always moving, this snapshot is unique to your moment: shift the time by a few hours or the place by a few time zones and the chart changes. Astrology treats that map as a symbolic blueprint of your character and the life areas you'll focus on.
What you need to calculate it
- Date of birth — fixes the Sun sign and the planets.
- Exact time of birth — fixes your Rising sign and the 12 houses (these move ~1° every 4 minutes, so minutes matter).
- Place of birth — the city, so the sky is calculated from the right spot on Earth.
A birth certificate is the most reliable source for your time. Without it you can still read your Sun and most planet signs, just not your Rising or houses with confidence.

Honestly: there's no scientific evidence that a birth chart predicts personality or events, and no known mechanism by which distant planets could shape a person.
